Playlists and playback

5 min read

Build custom playlists, control how your music plays, mark favourites, and download tracks so the music keeps going even if your WiFi drops out.

Playback controls

Every playlist, station and genre opens on a page with two big buttons at the top.

Play all

Plays the list from the top, in order. When it reaches the end it starts again, so the music never stops.

Shuffle

Plays the list in a random order, so customers do not hear the same sequence every day. The order changes each time the list starts again.

Repeat

App only: the loop-arrows icon below the buttons and in the full player. It is on by default. Turn it off if you want the list to stop at the end. The web player always loops.

Sort pills under the buttons change the order of the list: the curated default, most popular, newest, or A to Z.

Create a playlist

Each playlist holds up to 2,000 tracks. There are three ways to start one.

From the Playlists page

Tap New playlist, give it a name and it is ready to fill.

From a track

Add any track to a playlist and choose Create new playlist in the list that opens.

From another list

Open a station, genre or playlist, choose Add all to playlist, and create the new playlist there.

Add tracks to a playlist

One track, in the app

Tap the + next to the track and choose the playlist.

One track, on the web

Click the three dots on the track row, choose Add to playlist, then the playlist. The + in the full player does the same for the track playing now.

A whole list

On any station, genre or playlist page, choose Add all to playlist. In the app it is in the three-dots menu; on the web it is a button under the title.

Several tracks from Browse

Tick the tracks you want (or Select all), then tap Add to playlist in the bar that appears. See the Browse guide.

Duplicate tracks are allowed. If you add a track that is already in the playlist, Melodial asks whether to add it again, so it comes around more often.

Reorder tracks

Open one of your own playlists and choose Reorder: in the app it is in the three-dots menu, on the web it is a button under the title. Each track gets a drag handle. Press and hold to move a track, then tap the tick (app) or Done (web) to save. In the app, the cross discards your changes.

Manage a playlist

Rename

App: press and hold the playlist on the Playlists page, or choose Rename playlist in its three-dots menu. Web: hover the playlist card and click the pencil.

Remove a track

App: swipe the track to the left and tap the bin. Web: click the three dots on the row and choose Remove from this playlist.

Delete a playlist

App: Delete playlist in the three-dots menu, or press and hold the playlist. Web: the bin icon on the card, or Delete under the title.

Favourites

Tap the heart on any track to add it to your favourites. Favourites is a playlist of its own: open it from the person icon in the app, or under Recently played in the web player’s menu. You can play it, shuffle it and download it like any other list.

Offline playback

In the app

Open a playlist or station, tap the three dots and choose Download all for offline. Press and hold a single track to download just that one. Downloaded tracks show a green tick. Your downloads live under the person icon, then Downloads.

Storage limit

The app keeps downloads within the limit you set in Settings: 1GB, 2GB or 5GB. It warns you before a download would go past it.

In the web player

Every playlist, station and genre page has a Download button under the title. Click it once to download the whole list; click again to remove the download.

Downloaded tracks play exactly like streamed ones, with every control working normally. If your connection drops, the player switches to your downloads and tells you.

Tips for best results

1
Aim for 50 to 100+ tracks per playlist so your regulars do not hear the same sequence on every visit.
2
Use Add all to playlist to build a new playlist quickly, then remove the tracks you do not want.
3
Create separate playlists for different times of day, then let the Playback schedule switch between them.
4
Download your key playlists as a backup in case your WiFi drops.

All tracks are volume-levelled, so you will not get jarring loud-quiet jumps between songs.
