Music licensing for spas and wellness studios in United Kingdom

Melodial for Spa and Wellness Studios

Music licensing is the least relaxing part of running a spa. We built Melodial so you never have to think about it. Fully licensed music for every treatment room and lounge, for £4.99 a month. The licence is in the subscription.

Yes, even the ambient playlist in the relaxation lounge counts.

Most spa owners have no idea that the ambient soundtrack in the relaxation lounge needs a commercial licence. Fair enough. Nobody tells you until a letter from a collecting society arrives.

The rules say that any music clients or staff can hear, whether it's in a treatment room, at reception, or in the lounge, counts as a public performance. Personal streaming accounts, CDs, and free-to-air radio all need a separate commercial licence the moment clients can hear them, and there's no exemption for a small studio.

For a typical spa, that licence runs to several hundred a year, on top of what you pay for the music itself. We think that's a rough deal for a small wellness business, so we made a version where the music and the licence are the same £4.99 subscription.

The three rights you need to play music commercially

There are three separate rights involved in playing music in a business. The traditional system makes you deal with them across multiple bills. With Melodial, all three are in the one subscription.

Recording rights

The right to stream a specific sound recording of a song.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Publishing rights

The right to use the underlying composition and lyrics.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Public performance rights

The right to play music in a commercial environment where customers can hear it.

✓ Covered by Melodial

Melodial owns or directly licenses every track in its catalogue. None of it is registered with any collecting society, so there are no royalties to collect and no licence fees to pay. Your subscription is your licence.

Playlists for every part of your day

Why Melodial costs a fraction of the traditional route

Traditional

You pay PPL PRS for the public performance licence, then pay a separate streaming vendor for the music itself. Two bills, and every layer between you and the artist takes its share.

Melodial

Melodial owns or directly licenses every track. There is no PPL PRS fee to add on top, so your subscription is both the music and the licence, for £4.99/month.

What happens if you play unlicensed music?

PPL PRS actively contacts businesses. They send letters, make phone calls, and use music recognition technology to detect unlicensed music.

The penalties are real. Collecting societies can pursue businesses for backdated fees, damages, and legal costs once they identify unlicensed use. Playing copyright-protected music without a licence is an infringement under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

With Melodial, you're fully compliant from the moment you subscribe. No risk, no paperwork, no surprises.

Common questions from spas and wellness studios

Does my spa really need a licence?
Yes, unfortunately. If a client or staff member can hear music, whether in a treatment room, at reception, or in the relaxation lounge, it counts as a public performance and needs a commercial licence, even for a small studio. The good news: with Melodial, that licence is already inside your £4.99/month subscription.
Can I just use my Spotify or Apple Music subscription?
We wish. Personal streaming accounts are licensed for private, non-commercial use only, so playing them where clients can hear the music is still an unlicensed public performance, whatever the tier. Melodial works the same way in practice, an app connected to your speakers, except the commercial licence is built in.
Is Melodial really a legal alternative to a PPL PRS licence?
Yes. Melodial owns or directly licenses every track in its catalogue. None of it is registered with any collecting society, so there are no royalties to collect and no licence fees to pay. Your subscription is your licence.
Does one subscription cover multiple zones?
It covers multiple areas playing the same music as a single stream, reception, treatment rooms, relaxation lounges, pool areas, saunas. Want different music playing independently in different zones at the same time? That needs Melodial Plus, which adds a stream for each zone.
Do you have ambient music suitable for treatments?
Yes. We have dedicated ambient playlists, including tracks with no percussion and pure atmospheric textures, designed specifically for spa and wellness environments.
What if PPL PRS contacts my spa?
If PPL PRS or any licensing body contacts your spa, show them your Melodial Certificate of Compliance. You're covered. And if you need help responding, forward us their email and we'll draft the reply.
Do you have mainstream artists?
No, and that's exactly why you don't need a collecting society licence. Our catalogue is professionally produced ambient and wellness music designed for commercial environments. Your guests want to feel relaxed, they're not expecting chart hits in a treatment room.
Can I use this for yoga or meditation classes?
Yes. Melodial includes ambient and lo-fi playlists that work for yoga studios, meditation classes, and cool-down sessions. Your subscription covers all commercial use.
What does Melodial Basic actually include?
One flat £4.99/month (or £49.99/year) subscription covers the music and the licence for a single stream, playing to as many speakers as you like at one location. You get a downloadable Certificate of Compliance the moment you subscribe, and can play via any device connected to your speakers.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. No contracts and no cancellation fees. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.
What our customers say
Melodial has been great, easy to set up and use, reliable, cheaper, and fully licensed. I first found Melodial when searching for licensing options and it is saving us significantly: an annual subscription was almost the same as our previous monthly fees!
