What covers the floor of a 24/7 gym

For floor music, the picture is mixed. Pandora CloudCover says its license covers "all background music in common areas of gyms, fitness centers and trampoline parks", which it defines as "lobbies, hallways, locker rooms, offices and general workout areas" (CloudCover licensing FAQ), and Custom Channels lists workout areas, cardio floors, weight rooms and locker rooms as covered (Custom Channels help center). Others are narrower: SoundMachine "does not currently cover gyms and fitness facilities in the US" (SoundMachine), and Soundtrack's terms exclude businesses that conduct "physical exercises" to music (Soundtrack terms).

If you play mainstream music without a service that covers your floor, ASCAP and BMI both have ambient-use fitness rates: ASCAP from $383 a year by floor area where no group classes are held (ASCAP 2026 fitness rates), and BMI with a minimum of $420 a year per location (BMI 2025–26 fitness rates).

What to show an inspector

Many 24/7 gyms aren't staffed when someone calls in, so keep a printed copy of your Music License Certificate somewhere visible, such as the front desk or office door. It names your gym and location and confirms the music is licensed directly by Melodial. Forward any letter or email to support@melodial.com within 14 days and we'll reply as the owner.

Covers Melodial music only. Radio, TV, personal streaming apps and other music still need licenses from the performing rights organizations.

Questions we get

Does the license cover unstaffed hours?
Yes. The license covers Melodial music at your location whenever it plays, staffed or unstaffed, as long as your subscription is active.
Our gym has a floor and a separate studio. Do we need two licenses?
Only if they play different music at the same time. One stream to every speaker is one license; a second, separate stream needs a second license at $6.99 a month on Basic.
Can the music change automatically overnight?
Yes, with Melodial Plus, $13.99 a month per location or zone, which adds scheduling by time of day. Basic keeps playing the playlist you choose.
We already pay a music service for the floor. Why switch?
If your service covers your floor, you're licensed for that music. The reasons to switch are price, at $6.99 a month per location, and coverage for any classes you add, which bundled services exclude.
Do members hear chart hits?
No. Melodial plays its own catalog. If your members expect chart music by name, a mainstream service is the better fit.
