Coached classes need class licensing

Functional fitness gyms run on coached classes, and that's where business music licenses stop. Soundtrack's terms say its performing rights aren't licensed for businesses that conduct "physical exercises and/or instructed health club classes" to music (Soundtrack terms). The SiriusXM business agreement doesn't authorize use by a business that charges an admission fee, giving "fitness classes" as an example (SiriusXM customer agreement).

So a gym playing mainstream music in class needs its own fitness licenses: ASCAP's group-class rate starts at $545 a year (ASCAP 2026 fitness rates) and BMI's minimum is $420 a year per location (BMI 2025–26 fitness rates), which puts you at $965 or more before SESAC and GMR.

Melodial's music is owned outright by Melodial and registered with no performing rights organization. Your classes and open gym are covered by your subscription, as long as you play Melodial.

What to show an inspector

If a licensing representative visits during a class, point them to your Music License Certificate. It names your gym and location and states that Melodial's music is licensed directly by its owner. Don't commit to anything at the door; forward their details to support@melodial.com within 14 days and we'll take it from there.

Covers Melodial music only. Radio, TV, personal streaming apps and other music still need licenses from the performing rights organizations.

Questions we get

Are coached group classes covered?
Yes. Melodial owns every track, so our license covers instructor-led classes at the location on your subscription, plus open gym, as long as the music comes from Melodial.
Members ask for specific songs. Can we play them?
Not through Melodial, which plays its own catalog. Any other music needs licenses from the performing rights organizations.
We have an outdoor area. Is that covered?
The license covers the location on your subscription. If the outdoor area plays the same stream as inside, it's the same license; a separate stream needs its own license.
Can music follow our class times automatically?
With Melodial Plus, $13.99 a month per location or zone, you can schedule playlists by time of day. On Basic, coaches change the playlist from the app.
