Synchronized classes are excluded almost everywhere

When a class is choreographed to the beat, most business music services treat it as outside their license. Pandora CloudCover says music selected for a specific activity, "such as a spin or aerobics class", is not covered (CloudCover licensing FAQ). Custom Channels says it is "not licensed for use in synchronized or instructor-led fitness classes", naming spin among them (Custom Channels help center).

That leaves studios buying fitness licenses directly. At published rates, ASCAP's group-class license starts at $545 a year (ASCAP 2026 fitness rates) and BMI's fitness club license at $420 a year (BMI 2025–26 fitness rates). BMI also states that a streaming subscription doesn't include US performing rights (BMI fitness licensing).

Melodial's catalog is owned outright by Melodial and isn't registered with ASCAP, BMI, SESAC or GMR, so the license for your rides and rounds comes with your subscription.

How it fits a class schedule

A cycling or HIIT studio changes pace several times a day. Melodial keeps up.

  • 6 a.m. rides. Interval starts at pace and keeps building, for the early crowd who want to work hard and get to the office.
  • Midday express classes. Full Charge and Four On The Floor put a vocal on top for shorter, high-energy formats.
  • Sprints and climbs. Voltage, Breakline and Backroom for the hardest efforts of the class.

Instructors can change playlists from the app at any time on Basic. Melodial Plus, at $13.99 a month per location or zone, adds scheduling by time of day so the right playlist starts with each class, plus voice announcements for class reminders.

What to show an inspector

Keep your Music License Certificate handy at the front desk. It names your studio and location and confirms the music is licensed directly by Melodial as the owner. If a licensing representative calls in, show them the certificate, agree to nothing on the spot, and forward any correspondence to support@melodial.com within 14 days.

Covers Melodial music only. Radio, TV, personal streaming apps and other music still need licenses from the performing rights organizations.

Questions we get

Is music synced to a spin class really covered?
Yes. Because Melodial owns every track, our license covers instructor-led classes, including cycling and interval classes, at the location on your subscription, as long as the class plays Melodial music.
Can riders request specific songs?
No. Melodial plays its own catalog, not chart releases. If your format depends on named hits, a mainstream service with performing rights licenses is the right choice.
We run a cycling room and a HIIT room. Is that one license?
Only if both rooms play the same stream. Different music in each room at the same time needs a license per room, so two licenses on Basic is $13.98 a month.
Can I time playlists to our class timetable?
Scheduling by time of day is part of Melodial Plus, $13.99 a month per location or zone. On Basic, instructors start the playlist they want from the app.
