Why a studio's classes need their own license

Classes are where most music services stop. Pandora CloudCover says plainly: "If you just offer fitness classes like yoga or Pilates where the music is essential, then you wouldn't be covered with us" (CloudCover licensing FAQ). Custom Channels lists yoga and Pilates among the instructor-led classes it isn't licensed for (Custom Channels help center).

So a studio playing mainstream music in class takes out its own fitness licenses. ASCAP prices group classes by weekly participant capacity, starting at $545 a year for up to 500 participants (ASCAP 2026 fitness rates). BMI charges per member, with a minimum of $420 a year per location (BMI 2025–26 fitness rates). That's at least $965 a year, before SESAC and GMR.

Melodial owns every track it plays, and none is registered with a performing rights organization. Our license covers your classes and your reception, as long as the music comes from Melodial.

How it fits your studio day

Most studios run a few distinct moods between opening and close. Here's how Melodial handles them.

  • Flow classes. Waiting Room or Quiet Modern for vinyasa and slow flow, through the speakers you already use.
  • Barre and reformer blocks. Low Light and Deep Blue keep a slow, steady beat under the class without taking it over.
  • Savasana and cool-down. Long Exhale and Deep Stillness, two of the stillest playlists we have, for the last minutes of class.

On Basic, your instructors choose what plays from the app. If you'd rather set it once and have the music change by time of day, scheduling comes with Melodial Plus at $13.99 a month per location or zone.

What to show an inspector

If a BMI or ASCAP representative asks about the music in your classes, show your Music License Certificate. It names your studio and location and states that Melodial's music is licensed directly by its owner. Don't sign or pay anything on the spot; forward the letter or email to support@melodial.com within 14 days and we'll reply as the owner.

Covers Melodial music only. Radio, TV, personal streaming apps and other music still need licenses from the performing rights organizations.

Questions we get

Does the license cover my yoga and Pilates classes, or only background music?
Both. Melodial owns every track, so our license covers instructor-led classes as well as music at reception, at the location on your subscription.
What if a teacher wants to play their own playlist in class?
Music from personal streaming accounts or downloads isn't covered by our license and would need licenses from the performing rights organizations. For a class to be covered, every track has to come from Melodial.
We have two studio rooms running classes at once. How many licenses do we need?
One license plays one stream. If both rooms play different music at the same time, each room needs its own license, at $6.99 a month on Basic.
Can music change automatically between morning flow and evening barre?
Yes, with Melodial Plus at $13.99 a month per location or zone. Plus adds scheduling by time of day and voice announcements. Basic plays whatever you choose in the app.
Do you have chart hits for barre?
No. Melodial plays its own catalog. If your barre classes depend on specific chart songs, licenses from the performing rights organizations plus a mainstream service are the better fit for those classes.
