Connect a Google Nest

Connect your Google Nest to your phone

4 min read

Play Melodial through your Google Nest, Google Home, or Nest Mini using Bluetooth. Works with iPhone and Android, and only takes a minute.

What you need

Make sure your Google Nest or Home is plugged in, powered on, and connected to WiFi, and have the Melodial app or web player open on your phone. This works with Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Google Home, and Google Home Mini.

The quickest method

Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing" and your device enters pairing mode, ready to connect from your phone Bluetooth settings.

iPhone or iPad, method 1: voice command

1
Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing". Google responds and the speaker becomes discoverable.
2
Open Settings, then Bluetooth, and make sure the toggle is on.
3
Tap your Google Nest under Other Devices to connect.
4
Wait for it to show Connected. Google announces the connection.
5
Open Melodial or go to app.melodial.com, choose a playlist, and press play.

Next time, just say "Hey Google, Bluetooth" to reconnect, or turn on Bluetooth for automatic reconnection.

iPhone or iPad, method 2: the Google Home app

1
Open the Google Home app (download it from the App Store if needed) and sign in with your Google account.
2
Tap your Google Nest device, then the gear icon in the top right.
3
Tap Audio, then Paired Bluetooth Devices, then Enable Pairing Mode.
4
Go to your iPhone Bluetooth settings and tap your Google Nest to connect.
5
Open Melodial and press play.

Android, method 1: voice command

1
Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing" and the speaker becomes discoverable.
2
Swipe down and long-press the Bluetooth icon, or go to Settings, then Connected devices, then Bluetooth, and turn Bluetooth on.
3
Tap Pair new device, then tap your Google Nest in the list, confirming pairing if prompted.
4
Open Melodial or go to app.melodial.com, choose a playlist, and press play.

Next time, just say "Hey Google, Bluetooth" to reconnect. Android often reconnects automatically when Bluetooth is on and the speaker is in range.

Android, method 2: the Google Home app

1
Open the Google Home app (download it from Google Play if needed).
2
Tap your device, then the gear icon, then Audio, then Paired Bluetooth Devices, and tap Enable Pairing Mode.
3
Connect from your phone Bluetooth settings, then open Melodial and press play.

Troubleshooting

My phone cannot find the Google Nest

Make sure the speaker is in pairing mode by saying "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing" again. Pairing mode lasts about 2 minutes. Try turning your phone Bluetooth off and on, and make sure you are within 10 metres of the speaker.

It connects but no sound comes out

Say "Hey Google, volume 5" to check the volume. On iPhone, open Control Centre, long-press the music widget, and tap the AirPlay icon to make sure audio is routing to the Google Nest. Make sure Melodial is actually playing.

Google says Bluetooth is not available on this device

Some older Google Home devices need a firmware update for Bluetooth to work. Open the Google Home app, tap your device, tap the gear icon, and check for updates. All current Nest Mini, Nest Audio, and Google Home devices support Bluetooth.

The speaker keeps disconnecting

Stay within 10 metres of the speaker. If your WiFi drops, the Melodial stream may pause but Bluetooth should stay connected. Close battery-saving apps that might kill Bluetooth in the background, and on Android, set Melodial to Unrestricted under Settings, then Battery.

Can I use Google Cast instead of Bluetooth?

If you are using the Melodial web player at app.melodial.com in Chrome on Android, you can cast directly using the Cast button, no Bluetooth needed. This uses WiFi instead, which can be more stable. On iPhone, Bluetooth is the easier option since Cast support varies.

I want to disconnect

Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth disconnect" or turn off Bluetooth on your phone.

Useful voice commands

BrandHow to enter pairing mode
"Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing"Puts the speaker in pairing mode
"Hey Google, Bluetooth"Reconnects to the last paired device
"Hey Google, Bluetooth disconnect"Disconnects the current device
"Hey Google, volume 5"Sets the volume to 50 percent (range 1 to 10)
"Hey Google, volume up"Increases the volume
"Hey Google, stop"Stops playback

For the best experience, use a Nest Audio rather than a Nest Mini. It has a much larger speaker driver and sounds significantly better at higher volumes, which suits most business spaces.
