The Resort Music Playbook: Scoring the Whole Guest Journey

How to design a cohesive sound across every space of a resort, from arrival to pool to dinner.

Part of The Melodial Playbooks, a series on using sound to shape experience and lift results.

A resort is not one room, it is a journey. Arrival, lobby, pool, spa, restaurant, bar, the walk back to the room at night. Each of those moments has a feeling you want the guest to have, and sound is the thread that ties them together. Get it right and guests do not just enjoy the stay, they remember it, and increasingly they take it home with them.

The science

Philip Kotler argued back in 1973 that the atmosphere of a place can matter more to the purchase decision than the product itself. In leisure and hospitality, the atmosphere often is the product. People are buying a feeling, and sound is one of the fastest ways to deliver it, because it reaches the brain before the eye has finished taking in the view.

There is also the souvenir effect. Resorts now build signature playlists that guests follow and replay long after checkout, which quietly extends the brand relationship well beyond the stay. Some groups share the playlist before arrival and carry it through transfer vehicles, guest rooms, and poolside, so the sound becomes a through line for the entire trip.

A journey has movement, so it has tempo. Calm at check-in, easy energy at the pool, a gentle lift in the evening at the bar. And the sound should feel congruent with both the place and the brand, coastal, tropical, alpine, or urban-cool, so a guest could almost close their eyes and know where they are.

The playbook

  1. Map the guest journey and assign a mood to each zone. Walk it as a guest would, from the car door to the pillow, and decide what each moment should feel like.
  2. Build one sonic identity, expressed differently across zones. Not one playlist piped everywhere, and not ten unrelated ones. The pool and the lobby should feel like relatives, not strangers.
  3. Daypart each zone. The pool at 9am is not the pool at sunset. The lobby is calm in the morning and livelier in the evening. Schedule the shift so it happens without anyone touching a dial.
  4. Give guests something to take home. A signature playlist is a low-cost brand touchpoint that keeps working after checkout.
  5. Mind every zone’s licence. A resort can have dozens of separately audible spaces, and each one is a compliance point if you are using licensed music.
  6. Refresh so returning guests hear something new. Loyalty guests notice when nothing has changed.

Common mistakes

  • Piping the same track list through every space, so the spa sounds like the bar.
  • Multiplying licensing exposure across dozens of zones without realising it.
  • Relying on generic streaming that could belong to any property, which wastes the chance to sound like you.
  • Letting the evening energy arrive too early, or too late, because nothing is scheduled.

The compliant way to do this

Playing commercial music across a resort means paying performing rights organisations for every audible zone, in every market you operate. That is a recurring fee and a growing admin burden as you add spaces and properties.

Melodial is built for exactly this. Pricing is one flat annual price per stream per location, so a property running different music in the lobby, the pool, and the gym is simply three streams, with nothing owed to a PRO. You get one sonic identity across every zone, rights-clean by design, and for a truly signature sound you can commission fully custom music made only for your brand.

Quick reference

  • Map the journey, mood by mood.
  • One identity, many zones.
  • Daypart every space.
  • Offer a takeaway playlist.
  • Cover every audible zone, compliantly.
  • Refresh for returning guests.
